There was no Ham radio activity from Bhutan - until N Chhawna (AC5PN) made his famous ‘Hello Hello..... Able Charlie Baker Calling’ in the year 1955. Since then there was tremendous interest in A5 country which was ranked 2nd rarest country after North Korea. |

It was the untiring initiatives of people such as Yasuo Miyazawa (JH1AJT) and Jim Smith (VK9NS) that finally convinced the Royal Government of Bhutan to open up amateur radio activity from Bhutan. On the home front, people like Thinly Dorji, Director and Phub Tshering, Executive Engineer of the Bhutan Telecommunications Authority worked tirelessly to put into place “The Bhutan Radio Regulations of 1999” which came into effect as of April, 2000 thereby, for the first time, legalizing amateur radio activity from within the Kingdom. BHUTAN (A5) still remains a rare destination – not only for amateur radio but also for the splendor of its natural beauty and pristine environment. |
