OPERATION OF AMATEUR RADIO FROM BHUTAN
BY VISITING FOREIGN NATIONALS

Operational Modalities 

The radio station shall be operated by the visiting Radio Amateur under the supervision of an appointed officer/staff of Bhutan Telecom Authority.

All non-nationals wishing to visit the country for amateur radio operation shall apply for an Operator’s Licence and assignment of a Call Sign - through their appointed tour operator in Bhutan or directly to the Bhutan Telecommunications Authority (BTA), Ministry of Communications, Royal Government of Bhutan, Thimphu, BHUTAN.

The BTA will process the application and grant permission to eligible amateurs a visitor’s permit which will be valid for the duration of the Visa Validity but not exceeding 3 months. All visiting amateurs can bring their own equipment under terms and conditions laid down by the BTA or, if available, hire from local sources.

Licensing

Under Section 77 of the Bhutan Telecommunications Act 1999 and in accordance with Section 15.12 of the National Radio Regulations 1999, a visiting Amateur who has a valid licence from his own country’s Regulator will be issued a temporary Call Sign and Visitor’s Licence, provided all conditions are met and fees pre-paid.

Requirements

Operation of Amateur Radio can only be done from the premises specified by Bhutan Telecommunications Authority or from a location authorized by the BTA.

Foreign Operators requesting for permission should submit a photocopy of his/her home licence along with the Application Form.

All operators will be required to maintain and sign a Log Book during the period of operation.

Misuse of equipment or non-compliance of the National Radio Regulations 1999 will result in immediate suspension of Amateur Radio privileges.

All operations can only be done within the ITU Designated Amateur Radio Bands.

All visiting operators must enter Bhutan on Tourist Visa and will be governed by the terms and conditions set by the Department of Tourism, Ministry of Trade & Industry, Royal Government of Bhutan.

Call Signs

Call Sign will be assigned in the following combination:  

A52XX

A5  - Bhutan Country Prefix
   - Mandatory number allocated to identify that the ham is a non-national
XX - Alphabetical initials – must always comprise of 2 alphabets of operator’s choice.
