At
a time when every other country in the world scrambles to grab the
tourist dollar, Bhutan remains stoically adamant in its
determination to protect its environmental and cultural heritage by
limiting the flow of tourists into the country. Through the process
of imposing high daily night halt charges and restricting issue of visitation
rights, Bhutan assures itself the choice of select visitors –
responsible, educated, patient and appreciative.
Greed
plays no role in Bhutan’s high tariff – on the contrary, this
policy is a wise and deliberate attempt to keep the numbers low,
thereby ensuring quality service and personal attention to those few
who do manage to visit Bhutan. This policy of limited growth stems
from the fact that Bhutan is still medieval in many ways and its
infrastructure is not geared towards supporting an uncontrolled
inflow of tourist traffic.
So
beware! …. Bhutan is not the destination for swanky metropolises
or reverberating night life or shopping havens for the latest
electronics. For these, look to Bangkok or Singapore or Hong Kong.
When you think of Bhutan, think of the grandeur and beauty of nature
in its pristine form; think of a vibrant, colorful culture that
essentially remains untainted by the fallacies of modern concepts of
what constitute life and living; think of azure rivers rushing
through deep gorges and roads that wind along high cliffs; think of
evenings under a star spangled crystal dome; think of snow-capped
mountains rising 25,000ft into clear blue skies!
In
the land of the peaceful dragon, you will find ready smiles and
rustic humor and, at the end of your trip, we guarantee you will
have finally touched base with our culture and with nature!
